Continuing my lyrics writing spree, I have composed this in lines with the Kannada movie Duniya's (ದುನಿಯಾ) hit song "Saala madiyadru thuppa thinnu ( ಸಾಲ ಮಾಡಿಯಾದ್ರೂ ತುಪ್ಪ ತಿನ್ನು)".
This is the fastest in my lyric writing spree.

Krishnan love story(ಕೃಷ್ಣನ್ ಲವ್ ಸ್ಟೋರಿ) song

One of the hits of Kannada cinema industry this year has been “Krishna’n love story”(ಕೃಷ್ಣನ್ ಲವ್ ಸ್ಟೋರಿ). The songs of the movie are all hits. Songs cover a range of styles - sentimental, comedy, duets etc. Here I choose a song which is about falling in love. This has a comedy oriented picturisation. On the same tunes as this song  ತುಂಬಾ ಆರಾಮಾಗಿ ಇದ್ದ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ (“Thumba aramagi idda snehitha”)…check out my version of the lyrics.

Jackie (ಜಾಕಿ) is released today. This latest Puneeth Rajkumar movie has already generated enough hype to become a hit. Adding to Puneeth's charisma is the director's reputation. Duniya (ದುನಿಯಾ) Suri is directing this Parvathamma Rajkumar production. Kannada cinema needs a good hit. 

The songs are already a hit. Yograj's lyrics with the peppy music, have attracted lots of ears. 

After my Pancharangi (ಪಂಚರಂಗಿ) dialogues attempt, here is another on Jackie's lyrics.

What readers see and read?

 I was curious to know what my blog readers expect\see in my blog.
So adopted Google Analytics.
The hits to my blog have increased after I reviewed the a Kannada book.

Since July 14 (the day, I published the review) – the hits have increased.

I also checked the key search terms and found that most of the hits to the blog have come because of the review.

 So what’s the conclusion?

• Google Analytic is pretty handy
• There are people interested in Kannada books – Very good sign
• My blog is yet to catch attention of other search engines

Kavalu (ಕವಲು) - Book Review

The new Kannada novel is about sex and feminism – it’s pros and cons, in various cultures, at various stages of life. Without actually describing the act, Bhyrappa tries to dissect the concept of sex and its affect on one’s life in the backdrop of the feminist feelings.

The novel starts off in a police station, with the arrest of an industrialist. A few chapters are spent on the description and background of the characters. 

Two stories run in parallel.
 

The first story is of an industrialist, his dead wife, his mentally challenged daughter, his extra marital affairs, his second wife, her affairs, her feminist feelings and her son.

The second story is about a teacher in university, her feminist feelings, her affairs, her husband, her husband’s lifestyle, their separation and their daughter.

The first story is weaved with a thread called sex . The crux of the story - How a casual sex with a co-worker can turn the life on its head? And how the sex starved couple resort to other means and its effects.

The second story is weaved with a thread called feminism. Crux of this story – The efforts of a lady who wants to survive alone, breaking the net called “family”. Suspicions, legal hassles add to the additional glamour of the story.

Though the characters of the stories meet, the stories never. The work could have been split easily into 2 books.

The author brings in a small story about the western culture family setup (live-in, pre-nuptial agreements) basically to highlight the pitfalls of that culture.

The book starts off slowly and picks pace in the last 120 pages. After the boring start, many characters enter, to increase the tempo.

The legal aspects of divorce, domestic violence are the interesting portions in the book.

Known for his strong views in his earlier works, Bhyrappa tries to provide a balanced view on the women rights without taking any stance here. Reader can’t sympathize with any specific character of the book.  The book is full of Bhyrappa’s trademark language and style of writing.  The author seems to have been in a hurry and leaves many loose threads at the end. 

I do not want to become a spoiler by revealing more about the storyline in the book.

Simply putting – “Kavalu (ಕವಲು)” is not worth the hype created and not worth the name - SL Bhyrappa (ಸಂತೇಶಿವರ ಲಿಂಗಣ್ಣಯ್ಯ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ). The story line could be the material for movie - "Sex and Dhoka".
Overall a disappointing Kannada novel.

Musical marvels from a super trio

Which combination of strikers have scored most goals for a club or a nation?

Which opening pair has the record for most century partnerships in test cricket?

Which CM, home minister pair are the most successful and for which state?

Is UPAlliance more successful than the NDAlliance?

Which director actor pair have produced the most hits in Bollywood and Hollywood?

Some of these can be googled and answers would be available.

Some would need more research and analysis. They would be interesting as well.

One such combination is the trio of Mano Murthy, Sonu Nigam and Jayanth Kaikini.

I did some analysis on this combination.

This combination has given Kannada movie industry close to 15-18 songs from 2006 till now. These songs span over around 12-13 movies. Some of the movies are mega hits, but some are mega flops. The star cast also varies from big stars, big directors to small time guys. During these years, the Kannada film industry has seen fewer ups and many downs.

With all these factors, all the songs these guys made hits. Super hits.

The trio is not spared from some criticism. Mano's music is repetitive. Sonu is a stereotype singer. Jayanth is a purist writer.

But ultimately what matters is how the listener takes them. And its a big thumbs up from the Kannada audience. 

I am just not bored of listening to some of their musical marvels.

Remember a couple of compliments about them -

Jayanth once said on TV - "Mano's music has space for some thought. Listeners can pause and think and then the music continues. That why he is unique."

A friend of mine, Mr SP once said - "When Sonu takes a breath in the song 'Male Ninthu Hodha Mele', my breath just goes away. He reminds me of my ex-lovers" 

Thanks Mano, Sonu and Jayanth for the hits. Expecting more hits from you.

Inspired from ಬೀchi

I am back from my hometown. 3 days and 2 nights...Very refreshing weekend. I have material for some blogs...If time permits. Here's first one.

Most of the auto-rickshaws of my hometown have this written just below the back-rest of the driver, facing the passengers. 

Is this space optimization?

Kanglish?

Engnada?

Or just being smart?

For the non-Kannada people - "Do not keep your legs on this" is written in Kannada and English.

Remember how Rayasam Bheemasena Rao wrote his pen name - ಬೀchi

Prithvi - A cool watch

Jacob Verghese, Puneet Rajkumar, John Kokkin, Parvathi Menon and Manju Mandovi have weaved a very good & pleasant sounding movie. It is refreshingly fresh and a much needed family movie for the Kannada movie lovers. 

No wonder Deve Gowda watched this Kannada movie in theater. His dislike for the mining groups of Bellary is well-known.

 

For people who are interested and know about current Karnataka politics, Prithvi is a great watch. 

If you are not, you may still enjoy the movie purely because of the smooth flowing screenplay and colors used by director Jacob.

 

Puneet looks and dresses smart for his role of DC of a Karnataka district. Bellary. The story revolves around how the mining mafia controls the entire district (and the state). The DC fights for the rights of the people and has to face the wrath of the politicians and the local goondas. Parvathi, the DC's wife shows the personal side of the DC.  

 

Jacob's direction deserves applause. The last fight sequence is captured well. The songs and the colors used in the songs are pleasant. He seems to have a love for blue (like me) and that's great. The locales for the songs are dusty, ruins and suit the story.

 

Manikanth Kadri's music is also hummable. Lack of pre-launch publicity for the movie and music resulted in people catching the songs a bit late. Better late than never.

 

Puneet and Parvathi make a nice pair. John Kokkin has the right look of a villain. Bulging biceps, sharp eyes and curly uncombed hair makes him the perfect opponent for Puneet. Avinash, Sadhu kokila come and go. Support cast have also done a decent job.

 

As all movies, this one is also not perfect. The ending of the movie is slightly crappy. The dancer Puneet is not seen in the movie. The personal side of DC's life could have been handled in a better way. But these are minor things and have very less negative impact on the entertainment quotient of Prithvi.

 

The best is reserved for the last - Dialogues. Manju Mandovi has done an excellent job. One-liners make you smile and also hits your brain. I do not want to reveal any of the one-liners because it deserves to he heard in context.

 

Overall a good Kannada movie with a good team effort.
